The Beginnings of Norway's Airlines, part 1, 1918-1922

Rob J M Mulder . July 10, 2018, marks the centenary of the establishment of Norway's first airline, Det Norske Luftfartrederi. Operations did not start until 1920, however, when the new company won a bid to operate a service from Stavanger to Bergen via Haugesund. Between 1918 and 1922, other companies were formed as well and offered joyrides, demonstration flights and parachute jumps. 

These early airlines imported German, British and American surplus aircraft, such as Armstrong Whitworth F.K.8, Handley Page O/400, Avro 504, Curtiss MF Seagull, Caudron G.3, Junkers-Larsen JL-6 (Junkers F 13), Fairley F.II/F.III, Farman F.40, Friedrichshafen FF 49C, Hansa Brandenburg W29 and W33, LVG V.3 Susanne, LVG B.III, C.V, C.VI and LVG P.I, Nielsen & Winther F.a, Phönix Brandenburg C.I,  Brandenburg B.III, Phönix Mickl A 2.100, RAF BE.2e, Rumpler C.IV, Sablatnig N.I and P.III, Sopwith Baby, Supermarine Channel (naval and civil), Thulin B, Travemünde F4L, and many more.

This first volume in European Airlines' new series on Norway's airlines takes an in-depth look at the companies formed during 1918-1922, including the aircraft imported and the people involved, using numerous photographs (250+), many of which are published here for the first time.
